South Wharf precinct to be expanded.
The Victorian government has announced it will support the expansion of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC).
Both the MCEC and the Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry have called for the expansion of the Centre, which said it was turning away almost 20% of new business opportunities due to a lack of available space.
The MCEC said the proposed expansion would see the South Wharf precinct footprint grow to include multi-purpose convention and exhibition facilities, as well as hotel accommodation and new retail space.
MCEC ceo Peter King said the confirmation was “huge news” for the industry and the state.
“The expansion could include additional exhibition and banquet space, smaller meeting rooms, new plenary options and an exciting new indoor-outdoor networking and entertainment space.”
MCEC said the state government would work with partners to negotiate and finalise the proposed master plan, with details to come in the next few months.
