State government announces outcome of review of regional tourism.
Stuart Ayres, NSW minister for tourism and major events, has just announced the outcome of a review of the state’s Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs), with a major restructure including the creation of a new state-wide regional conferencing unit.
$43 million in funding over four years will be provided for six new Destination Networks, replacing the state’s existing RTOs, with Destination NSW to oversee the new arrangements within a newly established regional division.
Tourism Accommodation Australia welcomed the plan – particularly the new regional conferencing unit – with TAA ceo Carol Giuseppi saying it was a very positive step for hoteliers and tourism operators in regional NSW.
“While weekend and holiday tourism has remained strong in many regional centres, other areas have seen downturns in business travel and conferencing due to the depressed mining, manufacturing and agriculture sectors,” Giuseppi said.
